UNZIPPED1995

Unzipped is just the best movie ever. To me, anyway. It celebrates my love of fashion and the brilliant, nutty, mercurial creative geniuses that populate it.

I wanted to make a cinematic documentary. As always with my work, it is fun, funny, ironic, and pulls at your heartstrings.

The feature film documentary premiered at The Sundance Film Festival and won the coveted Sundance Audience Award. We filmed in two formats: Super 8, which I love for its texture and raw energy, and Super 16, mostly in black and white. The finale fashion show was filmed in color.

We even gave supermodel Shalom Harlow a camera to film as she walked the catwalk. Her footage was superb and made it into the final cut.

For our Sundance deadline, we worked 24/7 for three days straight— it was the sound house’s longest continuous session ever. Grueling, but it was worth it!

Some of the models featured in Unzipped were still rising to fame, like Kate Moss and Amber Valetta. Others were at their height, Like Cindy Crawford and Carla Bruni. A star-studded group, including Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, and many more. There will never be another moment like it. The film continues to be a milestone in film and the gold standard for fashion documentary. It is essentially a film about the creative process and the price we pay for pursuing our art.

Irina Shayk is too beautiful to be a nice person, but she is. We had so much fun on this campaign for Avon Lipstick. I made her walk in front of the white scrim about 1000 times. In 5 inch heels. And she never complained. Such a pro. Our cinematographer was the amazing Arnault Stefani. He does the best beauty work in the world. What can I say, he’s French!

THE GANG

I loved shooting these social media spots for the French knitting company, Wool And The Gang.Photographer Pamela Hanson asked me to make the film, and it features actress Jemima Kirk and her newborn baby (who, if I’m remembering correctly, was still breast-feeding), Gus Wenner, son of Rolling Stone founder Jann, and fab artist Dustin
Yellen, founder of the amazing Pioneer works.I pretty much winged it. We observed the groups being photographed and whipped up mini-stories on the spot. I love impromptu work, and believe in leaving it up to “the muse”, in other words, inspiration and divine luck.

BAREMINERALS

This bareMinerals campaign totally hit my sweet spot: Beauty meets documentary meets comedy. Fun, funny and sassy. We got to work with awesome Arielle Vandenberg. (Killer instagrammer, best videos ever, and host of CBS’ Love Island.)

Arielle is dedicated, hardworking and simply the nicest. Cinematographer Theo Stanley did the impossible – beauty lighting that is not restrictive, allowing Arielle to sing, laugh, dance and still look amazing. His efficient setups moved ever so quickly to keep us on schedule.

Arielle’s pup ‘Stinky’ was her co-star, but at the last minute Stinky couldn’t fly to New York so we had to use a stand-in, which caused quite the “stinky” among Arielle’s fans.

With apologies to the real Stinky, the show must go on!

Heidi Klum is having her body cast in bronze as part of art exhibition. While we were shooting, she looked at me and said, “Are you going to film me naked? I said, “Yes, please!” And she said “…Uh, OK.”
They layered strips of plaster over her torso and breasts, which was extremely time consuming. The plaster lady (whose name I can’t remember) warned that it could be dangerous, as the plaster cools and changes your body temperature. Heidi, (ever the trooper) said she could handle it. And she did, that is, until she fainted.

	NAOMI CONQUERS AFRICA

What to do when you are flying first class with supermodels Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington and Amber Valetta? You try to look cool. And then then you start filming.

VH1 asked me to document Naomi’s trip to South Africa to do a charity fashion show with President Nelson Mandela to honor the death of her close friend, Gianni Versace.

You can’t even imagine. Full-on wack-a-doodle trip.

The ostrich egg, the diamond necklace, Naomi dabbing the perspiration from Nelson Mandela’s brow as his stunned aides looked on, (touching the president?!) as well as some things I think I’ll remain tight lipped about.

I instantly realized why Naomi was, and still is, on top. She is so incredibly hard working. Every single day and night, she was pulling the fashion show together with her team.

Then, when it was all over, Naomi, Kate and I flew to Cuba. That’s when things really got wacky.

In this excerpt, I joined Naomi for a trip to a South African spa, where she got a salt scrub. I’ve never seen anybody scream like that at a spa before!

We cast singer/designer/actress Victoria Beckham and actress Eva Longoria together in this commercial because they are best friends. They told me how they met at a dinner party and neither wanted to sit next to the other. “Dreading it.”, they said. To their surprise, they were “FAFS”, friends at first sight.

I was nervous to meet Victoria. She seemed so serious. Pas-de-tout. Surprisingly, she was a delight. Victoria and Eva were as sweet and fun in real life as they are in the commercial.

CDFA AWARDS

The CFDA reunited me with fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi (from my film Unzipped) for this short film. We roamed the West Village, grabbing unsuspecting New Yorkers off the street. Isaac is lightning-fast on his feet, and always unexpected and fun. He approached a young man, quizzed him, and then said “Is that why you are dressed like a whore?” I was a tad shocked, but it was funny (although a tiny bit mean). Thankfully, the guy was a good sport. We ad-libbed our way through Washington Square Park, and, as always is the case in New York, there’s never a dull moment.

	HOTEL GRAMERCY PARK
2008

My producer Wendy Ettinger and I followed the brilliant night life impresario and hotel king, Ian Schrager for our Tribeca Film Festival award winning documentary, Hotel Gramercy Park. He dominated the velvet rope disco scene with Studio 54, and then practically invented the boutique hotel.

It was stunning to watch Ian work. He is obsessive and controlling in the best possible way. We documented him as he morphed the beloved Gramercy Park Hotel from a shabby-chic relic of New York’s past, into a state-of-the-art boutique hotel experience. He worried over every single detail, and keeping up with him was near impossible. Once, he called me at 3:00AM to say he was testing the Rose Bar’s sound system.

Regardless, Ian is a genius and I learned so much from him.
